Brinktop "Killara" Pinot Noir 2021
The "Killara" is the premium Pinot Noir in the Brinktop Range. It is named after the old farm that the Brinktop Vineyard is planted on. For almost 100 years the Iles Family ran pigs, dairy cows and then sheep on these slopes. When the irrigation scheme was run through this area the potential for viticulture was unlocked and a new era for Killara was born.
Just before Todd and Gill moved in to plant grapes on the slopes, Laurie Iles passed away and his ashes were spread on what is now block 3 planted out to the Pommard clone of Pinot Noir and these are the grapes used to make the Killara wine.
The Killara grapes were hand picked from Lawrence's block on the 29th March 2021 at 13 Baume’ then de-stemmed 85% on top of whole bunch 15%. Open vat fermented on skins for 10 days before being pressed to French oak barriques, 20% new. Bottled Dec 2021 after 8 months in barrel.
In Burgundy, from where the Pommard clone originates, this clone distinguishes itself from other clones with its firm and dense tannins. This clone seems to be behaving to type here as the structure of the Killara stands out. It is a smooth rich Pinot Noir with berry aromas and a savoury pallet. Benefits from decanting at this early stage. Enjoy with BBQ quail, a thick cut steak, roast lamb - or our favourite: Peruvian Duck Casserole.
